Our aim is to promote the idea that not only can everyone read Ulysses, but everyone can enjoy it. Guest leaders will include: Alison Armstrong, Keri Walsh, Robert Seidman, Sam Slote, Gregory Erickson, Maria McGarrity, Catherine Flynn, Caroline Elbay and Jonathan Greenberg. The course will be facilitated by JJS President Jonathan Goldman, with Joyce experts from the James Joyce Society and around the world logging in to lead sessions and provide critical contexts. We will read and discuss one chapter per week, starting 8 February and ending 7 June, right in time for Bloomsday festivities. A New York historic marker is located a few yards from the cottage.The New York Ulysses Book Club is a weekly, virtual book club/class for readers of all levels of experience with Ulysses, but especially welcoming those who have always wanted to read the novel but have not had the time or circumstances. A plaque is located a short distance away from the cottage and memorializes the fact that Grant died there. A visitor center and gift shop are also located there. A marker is located outside the cottage on the spot where Grant had his last look of the valley it had to be fenced off to stop visitors from chipping off pieces as souvenirs. Also in the parlor is the clock that was at the cottage, stopped at 8:08 am by General Grant's eldest son Frederick Dent Grant, who then reached over and touched his father's forehead for the last time. Some of the original floral arrangements from the funeral are on display, and the bed in which he died is shown in the parlor. Visitors can tour the historic house museum which has been furnished exactly as it was on the day Grant died. McGregor annually to see the original artifacts preserved at this historic site. The building became a New York State Historic Site in 1957 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. The house was maintained as a shrine to U.S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States, died of throat cancer at the cottage on July 23, 1885.
